Best Practices

Storing and handling biodiesel

Storage and handling guidelines for biodiesel are essentially the same as those for petroleum diesel. We recommend the following best practices for maintaining the quality and integrity of your fuel:

  • Turn tanks every 6 months
  • Clean tank collars every 6 months
  • Stick tank to measure water content once every 6 months
  • Be mindful of cold weather:
    • Replace B99 with a B50 blend when temperatures fall below 50 degrees
    • Treat B20 blends with a winterizing agent when temperatures fall below 25 degrees
    • When temperatures are consistently below freezing, follow the same anti-gelling protocols you’d follow for petroleum diesel, such as using tank heaters or adding winterizing agents
