How Biodiesel Stacks Up Against Other Alternative Fuels

The environmental revolution has created a global push for cleaner, more sustainable sources of energy. This means that while biodiesel has certainly gained a great deal of popularity, there are a variety of alternative fuel types. Wondering how biodiesel stacks up against the other major alternative fuels available on the market? We’ll compare a few of the most common.

  1. 1. Natural Gas

Though it’s a fossil fuel, natural gas offers two clear benefits as an alternative fuel – it’s widely available, and it’s known to burn much cleaner than petroleum-based fuels. It’s also generally less costly than gasoline. Unfortunately, vehicles that employ natural gas aren’t widely available, and its production process can cause significant emissions of methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas.

This well-known fuel for gasoline engines is an alcohol that can be produced using a range of crops, including corn and wheat. Ethanol’s primary benefit is that it burns much cleaner than petroleum-based fuels, though not as clean as biodiesel. It’s also a popular choice thanks to its sustainable production process. Due to these advantages and its general versatility, ethanol is found in nearly all gasoline blends in North America. The trade-off is that it’s generally much less efficient to produce than biodiesel.

Manufacturers have been exploring electricity as a power source for vehicles for many years, and that’s not a trend that’s expected to end anytime soon. The benefits of electricity? It’s extremely efficient, and there’s already a widespread electric infrastructure in place. The downside is that electricity is often generated by non-green energy sources, like coal or natural gas, and that it’s still not very well-suited for long haul or heavy-duty applications.

It’s difficult to overstate the benefits of biodiesel as an alternative fuel source. It has a considerably lower carbon footprint than most fuel alternatives, and it’s already compatible with nearly every diesel vehicle on the road, making it easy for the automotive industry to work incrementally toward using blends with higher biodiesel content. Biodiesel also offers a highly sustainable production process with minimum harmful waste products. The only real downside is that the world’s biodiesel infrastructure is limited – but, fortunately, that’s changing at a rapid pace.
